Now that I am back at work it’s time for me to reflect on the holiday that was and I’m sure that like many of us, on the business or fitness goals planned for the year ahead.
A holiday, break or weekend is generally a time when I like to relax, reflect, and spend some time at home doing some of the things that I love. For me this is golfing, reading and cycling; with food and wine not too far behind!
When it comes to reading I find that during the year it takes me ages to get through a book at a few pages each night, whilst over the holidays I will consume a book in 24-36 hrs like two of the easy read Jack Reacher books I enjoyed over this break. I fortunately did find some time to read a few more serious books that I can highly recommend.
The Advantage
The first was a book by Patrick Lencioni called “The Advantage”. This may not be everyone’s idea of a light read, but it was certainly one of the best and most common-sense business books that I have read for a long time. The best way to summarise this book would be that it provides a clear recipe or process to achieve great organisational health and focuses on six critical questions that all CEO’s or business leaders should be asking themselves.
Bite Me
The second book was “Bite Me” by Lynne Schinella and I can guess what some of you may be thinking at this point. However, it may surprise you to read that this is another business book which deals with communication and how to deal with or understand different personality types. This is a practical, yet fun guide on the do’s and don’ts of dealing with our differences. Deciding on whether you are an apple, lime, mango or banana or just what sort of fruit salad you may be is both interesting and fun. I have seen Lynne present at a conference on this subject and can highly recommend her. If you would like to do your own online test, click here.
East West Street
The third book was not one that I would ordinarily have chosen, except that it was given to me by my wife. The book was written by Philippe Sands and called “East West Street”. It was named Nonfiction book of the year in 2017 and for good reason. It is incredibly well written and meticulously researched by Phillipe who is a professor of Law and human rights lawyer based in London. This is basically a family memoir that documents the Jewish struggles in the period leading up to and during World War two and documents the lives of both some leading Jewish legal minds of the time as well as some of the infamous perpetrators who were eventually found guilty of crimes against humanity as part of the Nuremberg trials.
Hopefully you are better than me at making time during the year to pursue your passion and perhaps find time to read some great books. If so, then these are three that I can highly recommend.
